Serves: 4 cups
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion. Chopped very fine. I recommend using a food processor
- 3 cloves crushed garlic
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (cayenne, chipotle pepper spices work well too)
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt
- 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes. Can use diced too.
- ⅓ cup of molasses
- ⅓ cup white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon of dijon or yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and brown for about 5 minutes
- Add garlic. Cook for one minutes.
- Add everything else to the sauce pan EXCEPT the mustard and the paprika
- Stir and cook uncovered for at least 30 minutes. If it is getting really messy lower the heat.
- Once 30 minutes has passed add mustard and paprika. Alter more or less to taste.
- Cook for 5 more minutes
- Once finished you can then blend it if you like a really smooth sauce.
- It tastes awesome both ways!
You can substitute maple syrup or honey for the molasses.
