With the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing has now become one of the most effective ways of curbing the spread of the virus. While schools and other places have been forced to close to firmly put social distancing into practice, parents are left with no other choice than to devise means to keep the children busy and occupied. There are however a lot of activities that children can do to stay entertained whilst still practicing social distancing. Here are great outdoor activities for kids during social distancing:

social activities for kids

Play with a ball outside:

I know if I bring a soccer ball outside, me and my daughter are going to have a blast. There is nothing simpler. She absolutely loves it. And it is a great way for her to get out some of that toddler energy 🙂 One of our favorite activities for our kids during social distancing.

Hide and Seek:

This is a fun game that the kids can play with parents. This game never gets old. My daughter of course loves this game. Especially when I pretend to not see her when she is right in front of me. It cracks her up every time.

Hopscotch:

Hopscotch is a good game that you can engage in with the kids, it is not only a good form of physical activity but it can also keep the kids entertained.  All you need is to draw up squares in front of the house or in the backyard, then throw in a flat stone and then hop through the squares while skipping the one you threw the marker into but picking it up on your way back.

Playing with Sprinklers:

A lot of fun and laughter comes into play whenever the sprinklers are unleashed. They have so many varieties of these now. I recently set one up in my backyard, and it entertains my kid for hours!

A little fun tip- fill up some water balloons and draw faces on them. Then play catch with them. The anticipation of who will get drenched is always a good time

Treasure Hunts:

One of the best social distancing activities for children, treasure hunts are interesting and easy to set up depending on how many items that you want to utilize. You can hide 10-15 items in different corners and ask the kids to look for them. This will sure keep them busy for a while. Scavenger Hunts are also great!

Bike Riding or Scooters:

Riding bikes with the children is a great option if you can help the children keep their distance from others during the ride or you can opt for a quiet street. I take my daughter on her bike or scooter almost everyday. The scooter especially builds up her confidence so much . Especially when she scoots past older kids 🙂

Driveway Chalk Art:

Give the kids different colors of chalk and let them decorate the driveway. Allowing them to make different chalk art on the driveway will definitely make your driveway beautiful and lovely. I like to start my mornings with some breakfast outside and then we draw up a storm. I let my daughter choose what we draw, and she loves showing it off to neighbors. When we are finished with our art, we have a driveway picnic. It really is a fantastic way to start the day.

Jump Ropes:

It is very important to stay active during this stay-at-home period, jump ropes is a good kind of physical activity that you and the children will definitely benefit from.

Gardening:

One of the best ways to enjoy the fresh air with the children is through gardening. You can start a garden or if you already have one, teach the children how to tend to it. Get them a cute little watering can and they will be more than happy to help water your garden…and everything else!

Try Camping:

Even though parks are closed, that doesn’t mean you can’t camp out all. Bring out the sleeping bags and all other essentials and camp out in your backyard with the children.

Engaging in outdoor activities wields more advantage than just fun for children as it is also very good for their mental health and physical development. We like to bring books in there and pretend we are out in the woods.
