So the nice weather is here and that means one amazing thing. Barbecue!

Which of course stems from a wonderful sauce/ marinade. I have just the thing. A million times better than store bought and packed with flavor.

This sauce is rich, robust, a bit spicy…and goes great on EVERYTHING!

There are a few basic things that you need to achieve a great sauce. It has to be a bit sour, sweet, and have a tomato component. I used molasses with the recipe, but you can easily swap it for honey, or maple syrup. I have tried it with maple syrup, and in my opinion, the molasses creates that deep rich flavor that you want out of a BBQ sauce.

For the heat component you can use whatever you are comfortable with. I switch off from red pepper flakes and whatever hot sauce is in my fridge. Chipotle pepper works well too.

As with most things, the longer it becomes friends in the pot, the better it tastes. If you are in a pickle and need a yummy sauce fast, this can be on your picnic table in 40 minutes from start to finish.

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion. Chopped very fine. I recommend using a food processor
  • 3 cloves crushed garlic
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (cayenne, chipotle pepper spices work well too)
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 28 ounce can of crushed tomatoes. Can use diced too.
  • ⅓ cup of molasses
  • ⅓ cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of dijon or yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and brown for about 5 minutes
  2. Add garlic. Cook for one minutes.
  3. Add everything else to the sauce pan EXCEPT the mustard and the paprika
  4. Stir and cook uncovered for at least 30 minutes. If it is getting really messy lower the heat.
  5. Once 30 minutes has passed add mustard and paprika. Alter more or less to taste.
  6. Cook for 5 more minutes
  7. Once finished you can then blend it if you like a really smooth sauce.
  8. It tastes awesome both ways!
Notes
You can substitute maple syrup or honey for the molasses.
