This is a very simple whole wheat pita recipe. If you are a beginner in the world of bread making, do not be intimidated. It really is that easy.
After you mix in the wet ingredients and the flour, you want to knead it for about five minutes on a floured surface. It should take about 5 minutes. Until it is nice and elastic.
After you have kneaded it for five minutes, make a ball like shape. Then place it in an oiled bowl. This will help prevent it from sticking.
You also want to place a clean cloth over the bowl while proofing.
You want the dough to double in size. This should take about an hour.
Place in a 450 degree oven, on the center rack for about 5 minutes. They puff up rather quickly.
Let cool on a baking rack.

- 1 cup lukewarm water
- 2 teaspoons dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon honey or agave
- 1½ cup whole wheat flour
- 1¼ cup+1 tablespoon all-purpose flour + extra if needed
- 1 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- Mix water yeast and honey together. Let sit for five minutes. Then add the olive oil
- In separate bowl, combine flours salt.Mix the dry and wet ingredients together
- knead for about five minutes on a floured surface. Until it is elastic
- Make it a ball shape. Place in a oiled bowl and cover with cloth
- Let sit for 1 hour
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees
- Take dough out of bowl. Gently deflate it.
- Cut into 8 equal pieces.
- Make them into balls
- Roll them out to ¼ inch in thickness.
- As you do each one, cover the others with a damp cloth to keep from drying out
- Place prepared dough on cookie sheet.
- Four pitas at a time on the baking sheet
- Should be in the oven for about 5 minutes, until they puff up.
- Let cool on the cooling rack.
