What is Vegan Keto and What Can You Eat?!

The vegan keto diet is a low-carb, high-fat, moderate-protein diet that excludes all animal-based foods.

We have all heard of the keto diet,  and we have all heard of the vegan diet. Both of these lifestyles are taking the world by storm. But, I never heard of combining the two. That would be one hell of a dinner party to prepare!

So I looked into it, and it turns out to not be that crazy. In fact, I think there are a lot of similarities of this diet that I happen to follow.

  • I am mostly plant based.
  • Avocados and nuts are a huge part of my diet.
  • I also try to refrain from white flours and breads in general.

Here are some benefits of this Vegan Keto diet hybrid

  • Heart health – It has been proven to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
  • Blood sugar control – A diet low in sugars and refined flours do wonders for your insulin levels.
  • Weight management –  Eating whole foods and unprocessed foods will help keep your weight in check.

Foods  to eat on the Vegan Keto diet

  1. Coconut milk, coconut cream, unsweetened coconut.
  2. Olive oil, nut oil, coconut oil, MCT oil,  avocado oil.
  3.  Almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, hemp seeds, chia seeds, macadamia nuts, pumpkin seeds.
  4. Nut and seed butter: Peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower butter, cashew butter.
  5. Dark leafy greens, Brussels sprouts, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, mushrooms.
  6. Vegan protein such as tofu and tempeh.
  7. Vegan “dairy”: Coconut yogurt, vegan butter, cashew cheese.
  8. Avocados
  9. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries can be enjoyed in moderation.
  10. Nutritional yeast, fresh herbs, lemon juice, salt, pepper, spices.

Bottom line is, if you take care of what you put into your body, no matter the label, you are on the right track. That’s what I have taken away here. I grew up in the 90’s where everything was low fat this, and sugar free that. Basically the stuff with the most artificial EVERYTHING.  I still have to remind myself that fat isn’t bad. Just as long as it is natural fats…such as avocados, nuts and seeds.

Let us forget the titles, and just stop messing with the food!
