So, I saw this recipe on the youtube channel Lauren Toyotas Hot for Food. I’m obsessed with her videos. She takes vegan food and makes it relatable to the masses

They are crunchy, flavorful, versatile…and of course delicious!

I’ve used this recipe for tacos, stir fries, “fish sticks”, burritos, you name it. Serve it with the dip of your choice. Tastes great with hot sauce, hummus, or salsa.

hemp crust

Ingredients

  • 1 brick of firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 1/2 cup hemp hearts
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened almond  milk
  • 1 tsp of  Jersey Bonfire Garlic hot sauce

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. Drain the brick of tofu from the packaging water. Cut into 6 thick sticks or depending on the shape of your tofu brick you can cut those in half again for 16 pieces. They should be like a fish stick style shape.
  3. In a mixing bowl combine the bread crumbs, hemp hearts, spices, sea salt, and ground pepper. In another smaller bowl combine dijon and hot sauce with unsweetened almond milk. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  4. Brush the dijon mixture evenly on each tofu stick coating well. Then coat fully in the bread crumb mixture. Place sticks on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  5. Spray the sticks with a light coating of olive oil and bake for 30 minutes flipping over half way through the bake time. They should be a deep golden brown.

This recipe is pretty easy to prepare. The wet dry application for the tofu gets a little messy, but the taste is totally worth it. I added some  Jersey Bonfire hot sauce to my wet mixture to spice it up a bit. And I am so glad I did…I am currently obsessed with this stuff!
